I hate to reply to these threads as they never go anywhere, but I do
have to say, that: "Ever tried debugging steam?"

Steam, no I don't have the source to steam. If you are talking about a
mod of HL running under steam, then yes, every day. If your debugger is
setup properly it is very easy.
