I always thought the standard 128x128 made sense as 8ft by 8ft. For example,
the tiled floor texture has 8x8 tiles on a 512x512 pixel image, which uses
the standard .25 scale down to be a 128x128 texture. Using 16U = 1 foot,
each tile is 1 foot square, which makes sense based on real world tiles.
