I always thought the level that Americans hold singing the Star Spangled
Banner was sort of an amusing practice considering it was once a song to be
sung as drunk as possible.

Nevertheless, it's a difficult tune to sing (or to know what to do with) -
which was the original point.

This is also coming from an American.

I would say not to the same degree as someone who has been more developed.
What you would be observing then is aptitude. What is done with that
aptitude will determine whether they develop musicianship as defined by
someone
looking for a world-class hornist or a self-indulgent pop singer for whom
The Star Spangled Banner, not to mention what you refer to as "The Standard
Repertoire," is musically out of her league.

There's too much agreement here! Let me throw something else into the
pot.

Hans has been talking about 'prerequisites', aural ability, rhythmic
sense, performance technique, performance discipline etc. However, is
it possible for musicianship to manifest itself in a relative
beginner, a player who has not yet completed the course and who is not
yet able to play what we may call, 'The Standard Repertoire' ?
