What kind of files are they, i.e., what extension do they have?

You can learn a lot about the format of the files (or at least what the
computer thinks is the format) by right clicking a file, selecting
Properties, and then selecting the tab labelled something like
"Details".

All these things will tel you whether you are dealing with wav or mp3
files (I remember that the H2 can do both) or something else.  Not all
software players do well with every kind of file or every possible
bitrate.
