Update: After playing around with it for a couple of hours I think I've sussed most things out (although it's too late to try recording my horn.)
The files which sounded ok on the recorder but not on the computer would seem to have been recorded at the wrong setting - recording at a higher setting makes them much, much better on the recorder and as good on the computer. Generally , the sound quality is very good - I'm impressed. Some files which gave me problems were the 4 mike surround sound files, but there's a way of reducing those down to a single stereo file and that seems to work ok. My only problem now is the 4gig card which did not, it seems, survive the USB link up - that's the only disappointment now but I'm sure that one day I'll find that it was all my fault and that I did something daft, something I haven't sussed out yet. I'll buy another 4gig card tomorrow and try again. Thanks for all the help that you've offered - it's much appreciated.
