Setting the background. My experience with groups focused on a common mission has been well outside the music world. Generally, we get a leader who would serve 2 or three years then he would receive new assignment and his replacement would come along. During those two to three years the organization bore the stamp of the guy leading it. There were institutional/legal limits but as long as he operated within those limits he could run things as he saw fit.
I'm watching the Dallas Symphony under its current conductor. It's getting lots of good press, and the musicians seem to really like working under him. Looking at next year's schedule I note guest conductors come in during the year. As noted above, that is a concept I've had no experience with. We got one guy he ran things till it was to move on, then we'd get a new guy. How much leeway does a guest conductor have? _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
