1) Ah, that G#/Ab. On my Alex 200, I almost always use T2, as it is very well in tune and centers beautifully on this horn. However, when I play along with my bandmates, I'll sometimes go T23 to better match the rest of the section, if I must, to keep unison Ab's better tuned. On my Merker, it's T23. On the F side, if I'm feeling brave, it'll be 1 on the Alex, never F side on the Merker.
2) Switching from F to B? On the Alex, I'll use whatever works best for the situation. Generally, I'll switch to Bb at or around third space C, but I can use the Bb side with good results below the staff. The Alex is wonderfully clear and clean on the Bb side below the staff. If I can get good clarity on the F side, or if I'm playing a rather lyrical passage, it's F whenever possible. On the Merker, it's all F side below the staff, with careful attention paid to maintain clarity and prevent "tubbiness." The Merker has a very warm middle to low register on the F side. Not so much on Bb. Carl On Aug 21, 2011, at 11:57 AM, Robert Dickow wrote: > Hi all.
