Hmmm, that may well be the case. I *was* trying to install 3.1.5. I
suspect I was originally using version 3.2.0b3. So I went back and this
time tried an install of 3.2.0b3.

Well.... Given my feeling that I was mixing versions, here's what
happend with the install of the beta:
[dan@xeon:/usr/local/etc/htdig/bin] $ sh rundig
DB2 problem...: /usr/local/etc/htdig/var/word2root.db: btree version 6
requires a version upgrade
DB2 problem...: /usr/local/etc/htdig/var/root2word.db: btree version 6
requires a version upgrade
Then I tried a search and this appeared the httpd-error.log:
DB2 problem...:
/home/freebsddiary/configuration/htdig/share/word2root.db: btree version
6 requires a version upgrade
Clues please?
