A good option is to get a DSL router like the Linksys WRT54GL and run the open source "Tomato" firmware. With that, you can get volume statistics (and a great firewall).
Funny you should mention that. I have a Linksys WRT54G2; will that work?
Good luck getting the phone company to respond if you find that they are wrong, though.
