COBOL can be object oriented as well. And it does interoperate with Java, at least with z/OS Enterprise COBOL (tho not as well as some would like).. It's just that people don't seem too interested in upgrading their COBOL skills into the new facilities. An example here is some COBOL which does XML to interchange data with a Windows system. It was written by one of our more "rogue" programmers (who was "let go" in a recent downsizing). It works well.
