I look at this as just another one of the hoops IBM makes us jump through if we want to lower software costs to something more affordable. I've never had to go through any of the pricing gyrations, but I've been to a few presentations on them. It sure seems like it would be easier if IBM just cut prices. I realize that IBM has a monopoly on really large systems where they are already running z/OS, and they don't want to cut the prices of their biggest customers too much, or profits will fall, but if new customers can't affort to start out small and grow, how are they going to get any new customers for z/OS systems.
I thought we had a perfect senario to go to z/OS.e at our shop. As many of you know, we are converting our SAP/R2 system to SAP/R3, which would be considered new work and would fit the criteria for running under z/OS.e. Our management looked at running the file server under z/OS.e, but then there would need to be 2 separate operating systems and two separate systems. HOWEVER, if we merge our data into our Pennsylvania datacenter, we don't need to purchase a 2nd SAP/R3 license, which is saving a lot of money. We should be converting to R3 in early March, and physically closing our datacenter by the end of April.
