Some of you "kids" may not remember or you aren't old IBM'ers but this was all hashed out in about 1980 with the IBM internal availability of XEDIT. I don't know that anyone has the archives of the old IBMVM list. It would be interesting to see the arguments in it. EDGAR, the favorite (my opinion) full screen editor of the day had it on the right and it couldn't be moved. I had a hard time time getting used to it being on the left for the reason that Mark Pace gave, i.e. hitting newline puts me in the data area not in the prefix area.
