i noticed this, in compaq laptop model v5000TU, with an ubuntu 7.04, when u shut down, the Hard disk is in use untill the last micro second (untill the system LED is off), and the kind of clinking sound is heared from the HDD area, the same u hear when u force an abrupt powerroff.But in the newer version ubuntu-8.04, the HDD usage indicator goes off a little befor the system LED goes off.and its a very silent one.the sound form the cpu fan was also irregular druing shutdown in earlier case.
