Hey John; No we do not pay any extra money, the splitter is just like a regular phone splitter, except its got ethernet jacks instead phone jacks, you can pick one up at your local radio shack or radio shack like store for a couple bucks(not sure what the canadian break down is?) Anyway its really cool and works great!
