You can only share Ethernet two ways...

1) With a wired or wireless router that does NAT as explained above.

2) With two Ethernet cards.  One connected to the cable or DSL modem with
your "real" ethernet address; and the other with a non-routable address
(i.e. 10.21.1.1) that utilizes Proxy Server software to share the tcp/ip
packets with the machines on the 10.x.x.x network.

That's it...It's not like splitting an audio signal or phone line.  There
has to be something else routing the information besides copper.  Ethernet
doesn't work that way.
