trimming is important for a number of reasons. first, some of what you
need to trim is boilerplate that list servers are going to add to EVERY
message. for instance, you should trim the footer that's attached to
all LowEndMac messages, otherwise your message will show up with two
footers... then 3 when the next person replies, etc.

also, in a thread like this one, later messages could wind up being
severals of KB long, especially if no one trims anything. on a
broadband connection, this isn't much of a big deal. if you're on a
modem, it could be a problem. and if your mail arrives at a UNIX server
via UUCP (something you have no control over)....... God help you.
Also, even though this isn't as common as it used to be, some people
pay for their internet connection per-minute (common, I believe, to
this very day in Britain, yes?) or per-byte or kilobyte. These people
are incurring a cost (albeit a minor one) to download your message, so
the least you can do is trim out any extraneous information.

If you're on a modem in England, and no one on this list bothered to
trim any messages on this thread.... you'd be pretty sore at us right
now.
