I used to do that as late as 2000 when I was using a dialup ISP (Auracom). Although I didn't have to pay by the minue per se, I DID have a 120 hour monthly limit on time I could spend on-line during the day. Night time on-line time, though, was unlimited. If, however, I wanted to get my E-mail through the day, I'd download, disconnect, compose, then reconnect and batch upload. I originally STARTED doing this when I used to SHARE an Internet connection with a friend and had to limit time carefully. Actually, come to think of it, I used to do that ANY time I was doing my E-mail, regardless of how much time I had available. The logic was, why should I tie up a modem on someone else when I'm not using the connection? Nowadays, though, with a cable-based broadband connection, this is no longer an issue. :) John A.
