But, as Jerry said, it's drawing too much power from the USB bus. Do 
what he told you and plug it into a POWERED hub. Problem will be solved.

Well, I suppose one could argue that Apple should have a more graceful 
way of letting you know what the true problem is ... but really it's 
(not very) SmartDisk's fault, yes.
