That is just poor unfounded advice.
        One of the main strengths of the Mac compared to wintel 
machines.is the components used in the Mac tend to last a long time. 
There is no need to upgrade just because your Apple Care plan ran 
out. If your present Mac meets your needs and is working fine just 
keep using it.
        The fact that your Apple Care is over is not an indicator 
that your machine will fail. In fact if a part does fail as the 
machine ages you may find the replacement part is probably less 
expensive as the years go by., most Macs are also easy to repair if a 
component fails.. Use it till you need to upgrade or it breaks 
beyound use.
