So, you only use Macs that have 680x0 chips? If you want to use Mac
OS 10.x then your computer must have at least a Generation 3 (G3)
 PowerPC chip.

This is kind of OT, but can you back up that term Dennis? "G3 = Generation 3 PPC Chip." You must've read it somewhere and I have been looking for documentation on it. I say that because I remember when you were brand new to Macs and asking all kinds of green questions, and now you may have an answer to a question that I have. I'm not picking on you or making you prove this in public, just wondering where you read it so that I can have documentation. Same as the "I" in iMac standing for Internet. I know that one is true, but G3 I can't find any proof of.

Everyone I know has always thought that's what it stood for, but no one can
document it.

Basically, I remember it from when the the follow-on to the PowerPC 603e chip was released and it was called the "G3". I probably read it in one of the many Mac magazines that I subscribed to at the time.

BTW, my first computer was an Apple IIc, then a Mac LC, a Quadra 605, a PB145b, a SuperMac C500/603e, an iMac Rev B., and an iMac G4. I still have all of them except the 605. The SuperMac was upgraded to a G3 , the Rev. B iMac with a HARMONi card, and the LC & 605 had a IIe card (which is back in the LC)

While to the best of my knowledge Apple has never specified what constituted the "G1" & "G2" chips, As I understand it the line runs somewhat like this:

Motorola 601

Motorola 603, 603e , 604, 604e

Motorola 740, 750 (a.k.a. G3 in Apple's marketing) http://www.lowendmac.com/history/1997dk.shtml

Motorola 7455 (a.k.a. G4 in Apple's marketing)

IBM Power PC 970 (a.k.a. G5 in Apple's marketing)
