The situation described here is one of the reasons I went from dial-up to a
cable connection. I used to try the all night download routine, but
invariably there would be a disconnect during the night - usually after the
download had been going on for about and hour - and it was all for naught.
So I got my local phone company to come out and give me a clear line,
presumably without any "noise"  that would cause a disconnect.  They did,
but same result.  I then bought software that would supposedly improve modem
performance, and overcome the disconnect problem.  That didn't work either.

So here I am with cable. A bit more expensive, but far less frustrating.
