I remember having had the same error "Invalid PEOF" and the only way to solve it was using DiskWarrior.
A quick search on http://www.google.com/mac gave me this Apple Knowledgebase link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=16231 I'd go for DiskWarrior, the new version, even though it will take some time running, as it could be any important file that has a serious problem.
