like I have in Eudora. The problem is that you can't go from a
message to the next message without closing the first message window.
In Eudora, once I open a message, all I have to do to read the next
message is hit cmd-down arrow and the next message in that mailbox
opens, replacing the message that I finished reading. I've tried to
find a way to set up Apple Mail to do this but I haven't succeeded.

Dennis,

I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about regarding navigating from message to message. In Mail, you have your pile of mail in the upper half of the window ("half" being adjustable). Double-clicking one of these messages will indeed cause it to open in another window. However, instead of the double-click thing, a single click will cause the chosen/highlighted message to open in the lower half of the originally-mentioned window. Just an up arrow or down arrow will cause you to scroll through this list of messages. No closing one message before opening another. Then, hit "delete" and the highlighted/opened message will delete and cause the next message to appear in its place. If you've clicked "Mailboxes" to open that tray on one side or the other (sort of a sidebar), you can drag and drop the messages from that upper half panel to any box or folder in the sidebar.

To scroll down WITHIN the message, hit function+up or down arrow on a PowerBook, and I'm thinking page-up or page-down on a full keyboard (too lazy to get up and check it out on the iMac, even though this is an iMac list).

I also love the "sub" trays within my in-tray - I have one for each of my four email addresses. I can read all of my email from the in-tray, or just the email in a particular "sub" in-tray. It's easy to drag and drop email from an in-tray to another folder, too. I can't remember how it worked with OE, but I think Mail is possibly easier here as well. Top row of buttons customizable (an in most apps), so you can have it clean, or clutter it to your heart's content.

I'm not a connoisseur of email apps, but Mail works for me -
Claire
