Good read. A few comments:
[...] those people who still insist on using OS 9 and try to claim
that it is better than OS X. To be quite honest, it has annoyed me
greatly over the past 5 years that progress was held hostage by a
bunch of people who don't understand the nature of progress. So, the
people who refuse to use OS X will be left on their little islands
as the new machines will not support "Classic Mode".
Semi-insulting :), but that's Ok. Financial issues asside, many of
us prefer OS 9 because we're locked into it for business reasons
(apps and periphs that don't work on OS X). I've cured that in most
cases -- we've switched to WinXP for those apps and periphs.
driver support for 3rd party peripherals will probably be abysmal
for both platforms during the transition. Expect this from most
brands, but especially HP. Given their track record, I would not
recommend buying another HP peripheral until after the transition is
complete,
Whoa. I hadn't considered that, and here I am today perusing an HP
catalog. VERY good point, especially wrt HP! I agree 100%.
There will always be that one app that the developer refuses to
update, but people won't let go of. If there are enough of these
still floating around when the new machines come out, such programs
may have problems running under Rosetta on the new machines
Yea. And there's that fine print on Rosetta. Apple's guidelines say
that Rosetta requires apps that support the G3 processor and *does
not run* "applications that require a G4 or G5 processor". IOW, if
an app uses any of the G4 or G5's extensions, it's SOL. Guess we
need to start being more picky about the apps we use.
So, why not AMD instead of Intel if is Apple is switching to x86 processors?
Jobs didn't say Intel exclusively.
Options. It's all about options.
FWIW,
- Dan.
