I'm running Tiger and even though I remove things from the Dock they're

OSX, I don't use things like calendar, widgets, etc).

I haven't heard of this problem - good luck resolving it.

Also, is there a way to remove the blue magnifying glass icon at the top
right of the menu bar,

You could try looking at www.macosxhints.com, but I don't know of a way to disable Spotlight. Why do you want to do that?

and how can I easily see which applications are running?

The Dock shows a black triangle next to the icons of all running applications.

I really miss a simple appliacation menu like OS9. Thanks!

I joined the Mac community in OS X, so I can't help you there.
