Hello JSH,
May I suggest that you make sure you have Mail 2.0 or higher. I
could never get Mail 1.0 to work on an Emac with 512 memory. I have
not had any trouble with Mail 2.0. Perhaps you could trash the
existing mail and re- load a fresh install.

Interesting thing is if I remove the HD and put it into a FW case,
I can start up my own iMac G4 from it, and retrieve the mail

in this older G3 model.
