I will never concede that the Intel Core Duo is not an x86
processor.............Actually, yes I will. It is two x86
processors on
1 chip.
Oh dear ... :)
1.) The 8086 was a 8 bit processor.
(rest snipped for brevity)
I applaud your thorough and admirable research, but again you're
making my point FOR me.
You yourself point out in your excellent compendium of Intel chip
development several CLEAR breaks/leaps in the technology. During one
such break (the so-called "80586"), the company took the opportunity
to drop the x86 moniker and create the Pentium "family." The oft-
repeated mantra about the inability to trademark numbers is complete
folk myth -- the idea that you can't trademark numbers will come as a
HUGE surprise to 1-800-CALL-ATT and all such similar services.
Such folk myth is RAMPANT among geeks, but that doesn't make them any
less incorrect.
If you want to disagree with me (and Intel) about what constitutes a
chip "family," that's fine. But the inescapable fact is that Intel
has the right to decide what constitutes a chip family, and they
don't agree with the popular mythology.
Now with the history laid out, let me reiterate there is VIRTUALLY
NOTHING THE SAME between a Core Duo processor and an 8086/286/386/486
processor.
Glad we agree.
However, the fact that INTEL doesn't call it an X86 processor
does not mean that it isn't.
That's utter nonsense. Just because people in the south call ALL
brown soft drinks "Cokes" doesn't make them Cokes.
As you can see from the history above and
accompanying sources
Those sources you site mostly don't say that, and those that do are
simply wrong. Intel is the ONLY authority on the naming and family
groupings of their chip products, and they do not agree with geek
mythology, no matter how popular or widespread it may be. End of
discussion.
Thank You and have a wonderful day!
You too.
Cheers
Chas
