What should I use for Word Processing, etc. In the past I have relied on AppleWorks. However, this is no longer supported. Additionally, my wife (this is her iMac) would like to open word (.doc) files that friends send her in email.

I mostly use Ragtime Solo

A bit of a learning curve, but now it's my main replacement for the late lamented Word 5 (which is still my all-time favorite for straight word processing, but not as good as Ragtime for page layout - and I prefer not to deal with launching classic for Word 5). It also does spreadsheets, including graphing.

AppleWorks 6 works fine for me in Tiger. I mostly use the database, and occasionally the spreadsheet; I have little experience with word processing. It hasn't been updated for a while, but it works. I just checked & you could get a copy on eBay, and it's still available at the Apple Store. It should open .doc files, and I think save in Word format.

Also, TextEdit will also open .doc files. It can't handle columns & images & other complications, but you can see all the text and a single-column page will appear pretty near as it does in Word. Give it a try, as it came with your OS X.

I just checked AbiWord, and it will open Word - I mostly use it to open WordPerfect files people send me. Also free:

Looks like 2.4.x has bugs; I have 2.2.9, and others say 2.2.10 was fine. This looks like 2.2.11 for Mac - I'm downloading it now to try: http://www.abisource.com/downloads/abiword/2.2.11/MacOSX/ AbiWord-2.2.11.dmg

I have NeoOffice, but it's so slow to open that I give up and force- kill it every time it starts to launch. Between the above, and MS Office used as a last resort, I have everything I need. If I didn't have MS Office I'd keep NeoOffice around as a last resort. After all, it's free, so there's no downside if you have the disk space!
