What should I use for Word Processing, etc. In the past I have relied on AppleWorks. However, this is no longer supported. Additionally, my wife (this is her iMac) would like to open word (.doc) files that friends send her in email. This is a purely recreational iMac (not for business use) and I can't affort or justify spending $500 on Microsoft Office v.X for it (that is nearly 3X what we have invested in the computer).

What about iWork or NeoOffice? iWork doesn't have any form of spreadsheet, but appears to be more stable than NeoOffice...Will both (or either) of them open Word Documents (.doc) or Power Point Presentations?

I haven't used iWork; NeoOffice/J will open .doc and .ppt files, and has the advantage of being free. I haven't had any stability issues with recent versions. TextEdit can also open and save in .doc format, though I've known it to choke on more complex documents with graphics, tables etc.
