Ready to upgrade a few programs and have a question:

What should I use for Word Processing, etc. In the past I have relied on A=
ppleWorks. However, this is no longer supported.

Not sure what you mean here, no longer supported?

 Additionally, my wife (t=
his is her iMac) would like to open word (.doc) files that friends send her=
in email. This is a purely recreational iMac (not for business use) and I= can't affort or justify spending $500 on Microsoft Office v.X for it (that=
is nearly 3X what we have invested in the computer).

Besides the other suggestions made by list members, I have become fond of iText. Nice little freeware app, opens quickly (unlike AbiWord and various Office-like mega-apps), does everything I need most of the time, versions available for 9, X, and Windows.
