I'm quite happy with Ragtime Solo for page layout, thank you
Nobody here -- least of all me -- suggested that you MUST go and have a
look, or that you're a fool if you don't. You conveniently omitted the
part of my post where I said that iWork may not be for you or meet your
particularly needs. I merely suggested that before you DISMISS the
program, it would be worth your time to at least UNDERSTAND WHAT IT
ACTUALLY DOES. If you're confident you have no use for it, that's fine.
No program (from Apple or anyone else) meets everyone's particular needs.

really have the time to go playing around with things I have no
intention of ever buying.
Again, I never suggested that. I suggested that you take 30 seconds and
read the web page that describes what the program does, or if you have
three or four minutes to spare you can enjoy the QuickTime movies of the
program in action. If you don't care/aren't interested, that's fine. All
I ever intended to do was point out that you (and many others) have a
misperception of what iWork (Pages + Keynote) is and what it can do. If
you don't want to correct that, that's your business.
And it looks like, as with iLife, Apple will grab another $79 every
single year from you?
This is not true either for iLife OR iWork. You're under NO obligation
to update if you don't want to. But IF the new features appeal to you,
then yes, it's $79 for each new version. Because I actually understand
what the programs DO, I consider it one of the best software bargains
available, and I think you would too if you'd take the time to
understand it. But nobody here cares if you do or don't, it's your choice.
> So it's not that cheap if you want to get the
improvements (and components??) as the features grow.
"Cheap" has two meanings. I think NOTHING of upgrading my Adobe Creative
Suite every year or two (even though such updates cost hundreds of
dollars) because I use that software to actually DO THINGS that MAKE
MONEY. The upgrade fees are a trivial expense compared to what I earn
using the software, and Adobe offers me great VALUE that I have no
problem paying for.
Ragtime Solo is pretty decent and, happily, free for certain kinds of
use. But really good-quality free software is about as common as honest
politicians. When it's time to grow up and do really world-class,
professional stuff, you reach for software that costs money. If you're
just playing around with things, then Ragtime or Print Shop or
Appleworks will probably suit your needs, and there's no need to spend
the major bucks that programs like Photoshop require.
iLife (and iWork) are programs affordably priced so that consumers who
aren't "professionals" can nonetheless produce results FAR superior to
what Ragtime (or other, more complex programs) can do. This is not to
"diss" Ragtime and the other options, it's to point out that sometimes
you really want something ELEGANT and BEAUTIFUL, and that Apple makes
that possible for what I (and most people) would view as a VERY modest fee.
If I go and spend money on software, it will be on something I
actually feel a need for
I couldn't agree with this statement more. But I would point out that
software like iPhoto (for example) often opens up ideas and
possibilities that the consumer did not enter the program thinking of or
planning to do as they learn to use it. The power of that program makes
it possible for the consumer to attempt things and achieve results they
never would have thought possible or had even considered before.
This is why it's usually a bad idea to dismiss programs out-of-hand
without understanding them well enough to know how they MIGHT serve you.
Cheers
Chas
