This is indeed strange.  I've seen situations where "du" reports more
space than "df", when there's a separate filesystem mounted under
another filesystem.  For example "df" shows two filesystems,
/mount_point of size 5GB & /mount_point/sub of size 6GB, and if you do
a "du" of /mount_point, it shows 11GB, because it's adding up
everything mounted under /mount_point.  For some reason though, your
situation is ringing a bell.  If I think of anything else, I'll let
you know.
