We are a small company and did not want to go the expense of putting in a
dial-up server and having our people dial back into the corporate office.
There are also some significant LD savings in using an ISP with a national
presence in this way.

The only issue in my case has laptop users who connect via our corporate
network in the office using the imail smtp server, and then need a
different config when dialing in from home. As I posted earlier we have
found a work around, but it does complicate the users settings to some
degree and having to instruct them to set it up has been difficult. I
really don't care who relays the mail as long it get delivered :)

I wouldn't have been so frustrated if this change had been announced, but
our users have been able to access our smtp server via Mindspring for the
past 6 months. Having a bunch of users hound you when all you can say is it
worked yesterday can be frustrating. I spent 2 hours hounding our firewall
expert that the proper ports weren't open until we tracked down the real
issue.

Admittedly we are "cheaping out" by using Mindspring this way, but when you
get used to something working and then it goes away, you tend to be a little
upset. As far as I know the change occurred without announcement and that
is annoying.

I are cornfused.

I am not sure why this is "bad" and would like to know why it is "bad". For
example, we are primarily a hosting firm, but offer imail services as part
of our hosting packages.

We decided to ask customer's you use their ISP's SMTP server to send mail,
the reason being that we wanted to limit traffic on the boxes, whose main
use is for hosting and did not want to run the risk of ill thought out mass
mailings or other shenanigans impacting hosting. Of course for web
interface, they use the Imail server for outbound smtp.

I have two ISPs, Diaupnet and Prodigy and on NEITHER of them can you send
to any smtp server EXCEPT their own. This makes sense to prevent relays.

Have your customers use the ISP's smtp server for outbound mail, and use
your Imail pop3 server for receiving their mail.

What am I missing here that I don't see the "issue" with this scenario?
What is the issue? It would seem it would be a good thing..because less
traffic will flow through your Imail server taking up fewer resources.

In outlook anyway, you can still set up the account to show that it comes
from an imail user, and a reply to the imail user. you are simply sending it
to the ISP's SMTP server.

Enlighten me please :) Are you saying the users can't send mail via the web
interface either????

Regards,
Kim Noderer
