We had exactly this problem, after much searching we found it to be an
access list problem in one of our Cisco routers SMTP was not allowed
through the router, in our case it was intermittent because we have two
routes in to different buildings so one customer could come in one
route one day and no problems next day the other route and the dreaded
10051. IMail Tech team were great and gave us the clue that had us
looking. What had happened is that one of our engineers did a minor
modification to our access list table with Microsoft Telnet, which
inserted illegal characters into the list and corrupted our 'allow
SMTP line. It could also be a Firewall, no path.

The reason I write a lengthy explanation is that we ruled this out
early, "Could not possible be the ACS, we don't touch it" it was a
painful process locating the source of the problem and it was only
the quirky results the IMail team got that pointed us that way.

Hope this helps

Steve
