So I am assuming you did not select the option to backup the
registry when you backed up on tape.  If you had chose that option
then you may have hope.  When is the last time you ran rdisk /s?
It may be a pain, but you could re-install and use the last ERD
and get back some of the information.

If you did not trash the old NT folder you might check the
System32/Repair folder to see if an older repair is there.
