Actually I did select the option of backing up the registry on the tape. My
tape backup was geared towards a full restore in case of a crash: i.e. do a
minimal install of the server then do a full restore including security,
registry etc.
The problem that arose was that I couldn't do a full system restore. The
reason was the crash was caused by hardware problems - dual cpus that
weren't identical (though equal in speed) and therefore caused corruption of
the multi processor drivers in nt. So after the crash I switched from a dual
processor, onboard scsi Asus board to another more recent board with dual
cpu support and a separate Adaptec scsi controller. (Note: part of the
problem was that the cpu's were PIII 450s which are no longer commercially
available - if they had been it would have been a pure hardware issue.)
Because of that, doing a full restore would restore the old drivers and
guarantee blue screen of death when starting the server. So I had to do a
full new install of the operating system and a selective restore of data
files from tape.
That brought back the c:\imail folder but not the registry.
I guess what I was wondering about was if there was a way to 'poke a hole'
in the actual registry files contained in the backup tape - which I can't
restore for the above reasons - to extract the ipswitch mail keys. I'm not
holding my breath on that solution (in fact I'm just taking a break from the
not-so-amusing task of recreating the 1000 or so accounts in imail).
However, I did learn an important lesson from this, which I'd like to share
with other users. Never assume that a problem will be either hardware (in
which case you replace the part) or software (in which case you restore the
latest tape backup). Sometimes the two are interconnected, so prepare for
that eventuality by doing a separate backup of important registry and system
items.

So I am assuming you did not select the option to backup the
registry when you backed up on tape. If you had chose that option
then you may have hope. When is the last time you ran rdisk /s?
It may be a pain, but you could re-install and use the last ERD
and get back some of the information.
If you did not trash the old NT folder you might check the
System32/Repair folder to see if an older repair is there.
