The server is not timing out (meaning waiting for the client and
disconnecting if no data). IMail has timeouts long enough so that this is
unlikely to happen. Most likely are timeouts from the client side (it not
waiting long enough before it disconnects). I would recommend that any slow
link (like dialup) have the client set to check mail only every 10 (or more)
minutes and have timeout set to 2-4 minutes or longer. That the problem
occurs with attachments, tells me that it is taking longer to get the
attachment, than the client is waiting and this is certainly possible with
multimegabyte attachments and a dialup connection and typical client
settings (most clients have defaults for network connections which are
100-1000 times faster).
The reason that the mailbox cannot be manipulated by Web MSG or a new POP3
connection is because the previous session was not terminated correctly (by
the client timing out!) and IMail is keeping the old connection open (and a
lock on the mailbox file). This should go away in a hour or so and you can
just wait. Or you can stop the POP3/Web MSG services (which will clear the
lock and close all connections) and try again after restarting the services.
Not sure there is much to be done for bad dialup connections, except to
pressure the provider to make them as clean and reliable as possible. One
could try using a slower connection speed as this would make them less
sensitive to spurious disruption. But that means the connection will have to
remain good for longer periods of time.
