Checking the IMAP4 logs was a great idea.  Here's a piece of one:

I'm guessing the "NIL NIL" is what's preventing the messages from being read.

I notice that a few other people have mentioned fighting this, but not a lot 
of people.  Does this mean most people don't see this problem, and if so, 
why?  I realize you won't see this with web messaging, but there are a lot of 
people out there using Outlook Express.
