I have just re-read my mail and now understand the reason for the amount of
replies the wording does sound antagonistic and the wording was a bit
ill-picked and seems strong. I apologise as non of this was intended I was
just trying highlight that many people here have dedicated mail servers and
probably handle a lot of mail, but not all. But as I typed it in a rush I
didn't read it prior to sending.
I had never touched a mail server before starting my new job as the sole IT
person at a small ISP. Luckily we only have 400 or so domains to host and
around 5,00 pop3 mail boxes. Which from some of the postings is a drop in
the ocean for some of the mail admins on here.
Consequently some of the comments on the swapfile discussion are perfect for
a dedicated mail server but for one that shares a machine with other apps a
few small changes in the swap file settings can make a big difference over
time. This was not meant to be a replacement for ram but something that I
felt is worth doing however much ram you have because it is more to do with
NTFS and the OS generally.
Once again apologies to all for the naff wording of the original mail.
Mike
