Hi Dan,
First off I have read all of the other responses to your question.
I have been owner/partner in 3 ISP's to date, Tech Manager of an ISP,
worked for big corporations, and have been doing IT/business consulting
for 14 years.
Here are the things for sure:
1) Email is intellectual property and is the property of the company, so
there is *no* privacy issue here. This is more clear cut if your
company has an acceptable use policy where it is spelled out. If your
company does not have one, issues like this are a good reason to get
one.
2) Even in the absence of an AU policy, the email is *still* company
property.
3) That being said, the question is are you willing to stick your neck
out? I have seen it go both ways. If it is management looking through
email for any reason, it is different than an employee, even if it is
one of the sys admins.
I have a friend that got fired because he pointed out a security hole in
the email system. The only way he could know that was by testing the
system, for which he got fired.
4) So, the real question here...is it worth it? A company AU policy
would help you out. In it's absence, that leaves it up to you.
The company needs to know what is going on, AND you need to cover yer butt.
This is not black and white...you could do the right thing by reporting
it and still loose your job...
My advice is find a way to do both...report and CYA.
Thanks, andyb
