Make sure you initiate the transfer at least 30 days ahead of expiry.  They
absolutely will not bend on the rule that unless the transfer is initiated
30 days before expiry, they have to charge you for another full year and
then can do the transfer ... even though they only give 14 days notice of
expiry ... it's a classic case of a company going down fast and making a
last grab for an extra year of reg money ... we had to pay for a full year
for a fistful of domains just so they would release them the next day ... no
matter how much you try to reason with them, their attitude is simply "too
bad, we don't want to do anything to help you so pay us for another year or
we'll hold your domains ransom until they expire and then they are open
season ... they are like talking to a brick wall once they have you where
they want you ...

At least that has been our experience ...
