Are you aware that using a network share for the mailbox directory can
cause *huge* amounts of network traffic, that may cause a bottleneck?
If a user has a 50MB mailbox, for example, and deletes a single E-mail from
it, that could cause 100MB of network traffic.
> BTW, I'm running the AV on the server.
Is that AV software to protect the server (but not E-mail) from a virus
(for example, if you are using the mailserver and run a file that has a
virus in it), or is it to protect your E-mail (such as our Declude Virus,
IMail AntiVirus, or WebShield SMTP)?
If you are just using a standard AV program (as opposed to one that scans
just the E-mail), you are going to notice slowdowns as well, as the .mbx
files are scanned, and as spool directory files are scanned. In fact,
you'll often have cases where a single E-mail gets scanned dozens or
hundreds of times. This will use up a lot of CPU time. If you are using a
standard AV program, you should make sure that you exclude the \IMail\spool
directory, and the \\Mailboxshare directory.
Either of these -- using the network share or standard AV software -- could
cause problems opening the .mbx files.
