It will work, if everything is healthy. Before blaming IMail, you need to make sure that you have done all of the SMB tweaks recommended by MS. You did not mention having done anything to optimize and test SMB (OpLocks, packet analysis, et al.), so I'm assuming you haven't gone into this area.
