It's the other way around
ok, I knew what I was saying was logicial, but "wrong" in Imail's terms.

if you're both (a) using IMail web
services, and either (b) have an A record for example.com pointing to
a server other than IMail or (c) do not have an A record for
example.com at all. And there has *never* been a requirement for the
word 'mail.' It can be any host name.
but Ipswitch's doc has always mentioned the hated "mail" label and it not only confuses the heck out of everybody as appearing to be requirement, it is actually bad advice.

If you are not using WM/WC, you do not need to worry about it.
but newbies don't know that.

Ah! But it *does* have to do with DNS--really, it *only* has to do
with DNS. The IMail web services are hard-coded to assume that the OHN
will have an A record pointing to the box.
Does Imail query DNS for the A record of the OHN?

I think this is completely rational
the logic is opaque, and the result is frequent confusion by Imail newbies of what to do in Imail, and in DNS.

, but it's not documented at all (except here, constantly),
and it means that the OHN has to serve dual purposes, which is
misleading.
yep, the whole area is a swamp and bound to screw up first-timers.

It's still not as bad as you think. Not good, for sure, and I've
suggested many times that this web-specific data come from a setting
other than the OHN, one more subsidiary to the mail function; in kind,
the default Reply-To: domain should come from a different setting. But
it's actually intuitive when you look at IMail as an integrated
platform serving up web pages from a host that cannot just have an MX.
"host that cannot just have an MX" ??? what?

This means that Craig already has his OHN set up *correctly*,
actually.
but screwed up, which is my point.

What he needs to better manage, and it is annoying but part
of the game for now, is the Reply-To: (MAILADDR) field for himself and
his users.
but, *correctly*, the Reply-to is default filled in with OHN, screwing up the situation, and forcing admins to take an extra step, for each mail account, to *correct* it.

Most important, though: he needs to manage his open relay!
Imail still installs as a default open relay? :))
