But  it's  *not*  bad  advice  to  say  that  a  unique  hostname with
corresponding  A  record  be  used, since IMail *will not work* (as an
integrated system with WM/WC) without it!

You  are  absolutely  right  that the "mail" label should say "mail or
equivalent hostname with an A record pointing to the server."

Yes, it needs to be documented. Maybe someone (Eric?) from Ipswitch is

Web browsers query DNS for the A record of the OHN.

Yes.  The  OHN cannot simply have an MX resolving to, say, the primary
hostname  of  the box. It needs to have an A or CNAME record resolving
to the IP of the box.
