Yeah, back in the day, when we had version 6, we switched all our customers' shared
Imail servers to require SMTP authentication

(of course we had tested everything with success beforehand, and sent all customers a
letter explaining the need for SMTP authentication and how to configure their e-mail
programs)

Back then we had I think 8 or 9 servers with ~1,000 domains on each (with at least 5
users on each domain)

It was a big OUCH. We were bombarded with customer support calls. Despite everything
working well in tests, it turned out to not always work in practice. Often we had to
restart the SMTP service - after running for a while it just did not want to
authenticate anyone anymore.

Upgrading to version 7.x helped a lot. But some customers are not able to authenticate
to this day. And we can't figure out why.

Customers who use Outlook Express or Outlook or Entourage for Mac are not able to
authenticate to this day.

Subject: [IMail Forum] SMTP AUTH

This is driving me nuts.....

I have recently set up our servers so that users must now authenticate when
sending mail - I am hosting for about 50 domains in all.

No easy job as I had to talk several of them through setting up the
authentication process on their mail clients.

However, I am now left with 2 users out of about 250 who cannot authenticate
whatever I try. They are both using M$ Outlook Express ( newer versions ).
The server is set up for "No Mail Relay" and "Disable SMTP AUTH" is not
ticked "Disable SMTP VRFY" is ticked.

Has anyone been here before have ANY ideas as to what is happening here? and
what's more to the point why it doesn't work.

Regards

Allen
