In this case, my recommendation would be to keep the mail2 A record, but

remove it from the MX record.  That way, there won't be any 
confusion.  Mail will still be delivered as normal, except if your
server 
isn't reachable, you ensure that other mailservers will only have to try

once before realizing that your server isn't reachable.

                                                   
I wasn't aware that mail could be delivered without an mx record. So,
you are saying, remove the mail2.todhunter.com mx record from DNS, but
leave the mail2 host entry?

No offense, but, you sure that is going to work? I will catch holy h*ll
if my internal users can't send or receive email!
