It would be helpful if you could close this thread by telling us what, if any, problem + solution your arrived at.
I am working on similar set of symptoms where Imail simply refuses to accept mail from IMGate when the traffic gets heavy (the only param we are varying). I'm pretty sure IMail is too slow to respond.
In your case, playing with Imail relay settings aggravated/alleviated the "Imail-goes-deaf" problem, which surprised me.
