Would you care to explain exactly how making your mail server an open relay solves your problem?
If he/we knew exactly, I/you wouldn't still be surprised that relay settings would be sufficient load to have any effect on deafness.
open relay would mean that SMTPD would not need to apply restrictions from any ACL.
