Running 7.13 We've been experiencing POP problems for about a week and a half. Clients report "POP 3 server has not responded in 60 seconds," "unexpectedly disconnected from mail server," "unable to find mailserver," etc.
I've monitored cpu and memory usage off and on. I would estimate cpu usage to average about 40% during some survey times, 60-70% during other monitoring occasions. It gets as low as 2% (for a second or three) and as high as 100% (for just a couple seconds--five seconds was the longest I have seen it stay at 100%). When cpu usage is high, either POP3d32.exe or SMTPd32.exe are the big users with multiple instances of both and one instance or either using as much as 66% at times. I have one customer with his own host that is temporarily monitoring his employees' emails. I've had a "catch all mails" in place to get his employees' emails to him for about two months or so. I would love to terminate that and will make the most of any excuse and have already started to work that angle. Anyone with excellent recall might remember I was having problems with smtp32.exe using a great deal of cpu time and stopping when it couldn't get more a few weeks ago. On the advice of list members, I cleaned my spool to remove a "zombied" message. That took care of my smpt problem. My pop problem started about a week or so later. I would like to upgrade to 8 as a "reinstallation" type of solution. My boss has concerns about that plan (based on his experience of what can happen when you upgrade an certain OS's or software and with a problem and having the problem snowball). I understand his concern but can't say I share it with regard to Imail. I have two questions: 1) Anyone have a solution or suggestions for the POP problem? He'll let me upgrade after I fix. 2) Can anyone tell me if the upgrade to 8 replaces all program files? If it replaces all program files then I might be able to persuade him to let me upgrade. Of course, I am open to any other suggestions.
